Turia's Everest Trek

Story

I’m Turia Pitt. In September 2011 whilst competing in a 100km ultramarathon in the Kimberleys I was caught in a grassfire and received burns to 65% of my body. It’s been a bloody long and hard journey to get where I am now. But I do consider myself lucky. The standards of medical care in Australia are extraordinarily high, and even in the early days of my recovery, as hard as it was, I understood that if this had happened in some other parts of the world, quality medical care simply wouldn’t have been available. It’s one of those things you don’t think about much and take for granted until you really need it.

I first found out about Interplast through my reconstructive surgeon Professor Peter Haertsch. He’s one of a big group of surgeons, nurses and other medical practitioners from Australia and NZ who donate their time and expertise by volunteering with Interplast in developing countries - so the people who need it most can access basic health care. The work they do legitimately changes lives, and to me the Interplast volunteers are miracle workers.

Raising vital funds to support such incredible work calls for a monumental challenge! I’m so pumped to be leading a trek to Everest Base Camp for my 2017 Interplast fundraising adventure. No question it’s going to be an intense physical and mental challenge, and one of the hardest things I’ve taken on. Your support’s going to make it all worth it -  every dollar you donate is going directly to Interplast's life-changing medical assistance and capacity building work in Nepal and surrounding countries across the region.

I’m so humbled to have so many people from all corners of the world backing me. Thanks so much to each and every person supporting me on this challenge - you really are making a difference!
